How to Apply for a PAN Card Online on the NSDL Website?

The government has made it easier for people to apply for a PAN card via the Income Tax PAN services unit of NSDL. Consider the steps mentioned below to apply

  • Step 1: Visit the NSDL website.
  • Step 2: Choose the application type as "New PAN- Indian citizen (Form 49A)", "New PAN- Foreign citizen (Form 49A)", or changes in existing PAN data.
  • Step 3: You will get a token number on your mail ID. Click on the “Continue with the PAN application form” button.
  • Step 4: Read out the detailed instructions carefully before entering the details on the PAN card application. Click on “Here” to see the instructions for the PAN card application. 

Choose a mode of submission of PAN card documents and also choose if you need a physical PAN card. Fill out all the required details on the form like personal information, contact details, and AO documents. After that, upload the required documents. 

  • Step 5: Upon submitting the PAN card application, you will be redirected to the payment page. Choose the mode of payment and pay the required amount of fee. You can make the payment using a credit/debit card, demand draft, or net banking. 
  • Step 6: After making the payment successfully, a payment receipt will be generated. Click on “Continue” to proceed further. 
  • Step 7: Click on the “Continue with e-KYC” option after which you will get an OTP on your mobile number which is linked to your Aadhar card. Enter the “OTP” and submit the form.
  • Step 8: Now, click on the “Continue with e-sign” option and enter your 12-digit Aadhar number. You will again get an OTP on the linked mobile number. Enter the OTP and submit the application to receive an acknowledgment slip in PDF form having your birth date as the password in DD/MM/YY format. You can use the acknowledgment number to check your PAN card status.

Note: If you have selected the option of “Forward application documents physically” then you need to take a printout of the acknowledgment and send it along with the attachment of the required documents to the address mentioned below via post:

You will get your PAN card on your email or residential address within 15-20 days after it is processed and generated.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online Via UTIITSL Website?

You can apply for a PAN card through the UTIITSL website by following the steps mentioned below:

  • Step 1: Navigate to the UTIITSL website. 
  • Step 2: Select the “Click to Apply” option under the “PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI tab or PAN card for Foreign Citizen Tab.
  • Step 3: Choose the “Apply for New PAN Card (Form 49A) or (Form 49AA) tab.
  • Step 4: Select a mode to submit the documents, the status of the applicant, and PAN card mode either physical PAN card and e-PAN, or only e-PAN, and click on the “Submit” button.
  • Step 5: You will receive a reference number, once you receive it click on “OK”. 
  • Step 6: Provide all the required details on the form like your personal details, document details, contact information, address, and any other required details. Upload all the required documents and submit the form.
  • Step 7: Pay the required application fee and upon successful payment, your screen will display an acknowledgment number and you will also get it on your mail ID.

The UTIITSL will process your PAN card application and documents and issue your PAN card within 15 days. 

Note: If you select the “Physical Mode” option, you need to take a printout of the form, attach a photograph and signature, affix the documents to the form, and post them to any of your nearest UTIITSL offices. Below are some addresses to consider:

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online Through Income Tax Portal?

The instant e-PAN facility is available only to individuals who are above the age of 18 years. They must have a valid Aadhar number and Aadhar-linked mobile number to apply for Instant e-PAN. Any individual other than Indian citizens cannot apply for an instant e-PAN. Such as NRIs, HUFs, companies, trusts, partnership firms, etc. 

People who have a valid Aadhar number can apply for an e-PAN instantly without filling out any application form. Here are the steps to consider to apply for an instant PAN card:

  • Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Portal and click on the “Instant e-PAN” option.
  • Step 2: On the next page, click on the “Get new e-PAN” option, enter your Aadhar number, and click on Continue.
  • Step 3: You will be redirected to an OTP validation page. Tick the checkbox and accept all the terms and conditions. After that, click on the “Continue” button.
  • Step 4: Enter the OTP received on your mobile number registered with your Aadhar. Tick the checkbox and click on the “Continue” button.
  • Step 5: You will then see some details like your name, birth date, etc. as per your Aadhar card. Click on the “Validate Email” option, tick the checkbox, and click on “Continue”.

You will get an acknowledgment number and a confirmation message on your mobile number. Once your e-PAN is allotted, you will be informed about the same. Generally, your e-PAN card will be generated within 10 minutes and you can download it from the same Income Tax Portal. 

You might have to pay some extra fees and request delivery using the reprint option if you wish to get a hard copy of your PAN card. 

Documents Required To Apply For A PAN Card?

Proof of Identity 

  • Copy of your Aadhar card
  • Pensioner card’s copy with a clear photograph
  • A photo ID card issued by the state or central government
  • Copy of Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India 
  • Valid driving license copy issued by the Regional Transport Office

Proof of Address 

  • Copy of your property tax assessment order
  • Photocopy of your passport with current address details
  • A recent copy of your electricity bill/water bill in your name
  • Copy of your bank account statement for the last three months
  • In some cases, a certificate of address signed by a Gazetted officer can also be used as an address proof. 

Proof of Date of Birth 

  • Your passport’s copy that has your birth details
  • A copy of your birth certificate issued by a municipal authority.
  • In some cases, you can use your Aadhar card if it has your correct date of birth. 
  • Matriculation certificate or school leaving certificate’s copy that mentions your birth date.
  • A copy of your PAN card if you are applying for changes in your date of birth on an existing PAN card.
