2) If the applicant was born in India and never held an Indian passport. traveled using their parent's Indian passport then provide the following documents:

  • Domicile Certificate/Nativity certificate issued by the District Magistrate or similar. (In original) or,

3) If born in India between January 26, 1950 to June 30, 1987:

  • A birth certificate issued by the Indian Government

Note: Birth certificates must be certified by the District Magistrate/District collector. It is required for certificates issued after a certain date. It should have the name, stamp, seal, and telephone number with the area code for verification. or,

  • Original school leaving certificate (Matric and higher board-level classes).

Note: For verification of a post-dated school leaving certificate from India. Director of Education/District Magistrate/District collector of the area must validate it. It must have the name, stamp, seal, and telephone number with the area code for verification.

B. Applying based on parents/grandparents/great-grandparents

  1. Birth Certificate showing parent's name. It is mandatory for applicants who are born outside India. Applicants born in India can provide the first and last page of their old Indian passport. Instead of a birth certificate (Upload online also).
  2. Proof of self or parents/grandparents/great-grandparents for (Upload online also).
  • Being a citizen of India at the time of or at any time after the commencement of the constitution i.e. 26.01.1950 or,
  • Eligible to become a citizen of India at the commencement of the constitution i.e. 26.01.1950 or,
  • Part of a territory that became a part of India after August 15th, 1947.

These could be:

  • Copy of your Indian passport or,
  • Domicile certificate copy issued by the competent authority or,
  • A copy of the nativity certificate from the competent authority or,
  • First and last page of OCI card/PIO card. Include base papers and documents under which the OCI/PIO was issued. or,
  • Proof of relationship as parents/grandparents/great-grandparents. If their Indian origin is declared as the basis for registration as an OCI cardholder. The document can be a 'Birth certificate' issued from the competent authority. It should mention both the parents' names showing the link to the person of Indian origin i.e. root Indian.

C. Application For Minor Child

  • Every document mentioned above in 'B'
  • A current copy of the passport of the parent to confirm his/her signature in part B of the application. (Upload online also)

If parents are divorced:

  • A court order of breaking the marriage and child arrangement order. The order should mention that the legal custody of the child is with the parent who is applying.

D. Application for OCI under Foreign Spouse Category. Applying after at least 2 years of marriage.
