Indian Citizenship

Citizenship in India was granted to all individuals present at the beginning of the Constitution on January 26, 1950, who were also residing in the territory of India. There were three conditions to get the indian citizenship card, which are:

- You must be born in India

- At least one of your parents must have been born in India

- Or, you must have been living in India for at least five years before the commencement of the Constitution

There are three ways by which you can acquire Indian citizenship, which are: Acquisition by birth, descent, naturalization, and Registration. You must know that India does not allow dual citizenship, which means if you have a citizenship of India, but you also want to get the citizenship of another country, then you have to renounce your Indian citizenship. It is important to do that because if you are found with dual citizenship, then it would be considered an illegal offense.

Citizenship Amendment Act

There have been amendments to the indian Citizenship Act 1955 several times. The most recent one was done in 2019, and it was especially for all the illegal immigrants who are from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan. The Indian Citizenship Act states that if you are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian, and entered India on or before 31 December 2014, then you can get Citizenship for the Indian region. This act completely excluded the Muslims, which later on led to many protests and criticisms. This act also outlines a brief explanation of the ways by which someone can be an indian citizen. It also tells us about the termination of Indian Citizenship in case of double citizenship.
