Types of NRI Certificates

There are two types of NRI certificates for which you can apply.

NRI Certificate for OCI Cardholders: NRI certificate for OCI cardholders allows them to avail of all the benefits in the economic sector, financial sector, and educational sector.

NRI Certificate for General Purposes: This certificate helps you to get all the benefits of legal purposes in the administrative, financial, and economic matters. 

Eligibility Criteria for NRI Certificate

You need to meet the following conditions to apply online for NRI certificate. 

• To apply for an NRI certificate, you must be an Indian National.
• You should have a valid Indian Passport.
• You must have stayed in the current residence for more than 182 days.

Documents Required for NRI Certificate

Here are some of the NRI certificate requirements that you need to submit for a smooth application process.

For Indian Passport Holders

In Person:

• Two passport-size photos.
• NRI status declaration form.
• Original and a copy of the Indian Passport.
• Proof of foreign country status.
• Proof of address of the foreign country.

By Mail:

• Recently clicked two photos.
• Original and a copy of your valid Indian Passport.
• Declaration form for NRI status.
• Proof of foreign residency.

For Foreign Country Passport of Indian Origin + OCI Cardholders

In Person:

• 2 Passport-size photos.
• Original and a Copy of your Foreign passport.
• Proof of resident status in a foreign country.
• Copy of the first and last page of the OCI card.
• Proof of address of the foreign country.

By Mail:

• 2 passport-size photos.
• Copy of your valid foreign passport.
• Proof of address in a foreign country.
• Copy of OCI card's first and last page.
• Proof of resident status in a foreign country.

For Foreign Passport Holders of Indian Origin

If you have a valid foreign passport but don't have an OCI Card Application, then you are not eligible to apply for an NRI certificate.

Fees and Processing Time for NRI Certificate

To apply for an NRI certificate, you must pay a non-refundable fee of US$25, plus an additional fee of US$2 for the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF).

The Normal processing time for the NRI certificate application is approximately 10 days from the submission of the documents at the embassy by the applicant. However, the processing time also depends on the application details and documents. If all is correct, then your application will process quickly.

Application Process for NRI Certificate
