What is a Foreign Passport?

A foreign passport is an official travel document issued by a country's government to its citizens or eligible nationals. In immigration and visa contexts, it refers to a passport issued by a country other than the one where an individual is applying for entry, residence, or government services. It serves as internationally recognized proof of the holder's identity and nationality during international travel.

A foreign passport is issued according to the nationality laws of the issuing country. Individuals who acquire citizenship of another country may become eligible to receive that country's passport. However, some countries, including India, do not generally recognize dual citizenship and may require individuals to renounce their previous citizenship in accordance with applicable nationality laws.

Foreign Passport vs. Domestic Passport

The term foreign passport is relative to the country where it is being referenced. For example, an Indian passport is considered a foreign passport when presented to U.S. immigration authorities, while a U.S. passport is a foreign passport when used for visa or immigration services in India.

A foreign passport should not be confused with citizenship, nationality, or immigration status. While it is evidence of the holder's nationality and identity, it does not by itself determine a person's visa status, residency rights, or immigration eligibility.
